Dia de Los Muertos

So, one of the fun things I do in my classroom each year is a cultural celebration of Dia de Los Muertos - or Day of the Dead. At first, all the kids think it sounds really morbid, but I explain to them that that's because of how our culture views death. In Latin America, they honor their loved ones who have passed away each year on November 1 and 2. The 1st is to remember the children who have died, and the 2nd is for everyone else.

This year, I thought I'd share some of the pics of things my students have done in class for the cultural celebration. Each class has a different project: skeletons for Spanish 2, altars for Spanish Cultures, and papel picado (latin american paper cutting art) for Spanish 1.

How do you like these? Fun, huh?

Looks like you all had fun with those skeletons. Sara reports that her ESL students (mainly from central America) didn't know what dia de los muertos was.

BTW, nice hair! I like it a lot.

I love the hair too! So much fun! Very sassy (I wish I had straight hair like yours...the exact opposite of my own).

The class pictures look great! And I LOVE the comments they left for your dad! So great! I wonder what my second graders would say. Hmmm...

Yeah, we will have a "better late than never" video about the day of the dead tomorrow and I am hoping to find a little picture book to go with that video. The movie is on united streaming and is actually geared for 1st and 2nd graders. Perfect! The girls, all from C America except one from Bolivia, did their best telenovela acting when I mentioned dia de los muetros...so scary! No telenovela acting, please! Then I said no diablos and they all practically crossed themselves. It was really funny! -S

LOL - that's funny about how your kids reacted to Dia de Los Muertos, Sara. I can just picture them, too. Cute. Yeah, guess it really is more of just a Mexican thing, huh? Good to learn about, though.
Oh, and thanks, I love my hair, too! It is quite fun and sassy. I need to get it cut again, though. I liked it just a bit shorter.

I like seeing you in your element!

And I am glad to see that you are blogging again. I hardly feel that anyone reads mine. Maybe because I haven't gotten the whole picture thing figured out.
